Across the waters from Hilton Head Island and Bluffton is an island
paradise called Daufuskie Island. Daufuskie is a remote island and only
accessible by boat and compromising about 5000 acres of lush semitropical
landscape. In recent years part of the island has been developed into resorts.
Several Hilton Head marinas offer scheduled tours to the island. The beach is
beautiful and, so far, relative unpopulated.
There are three
championship courses on this serene island, designed by three of the biggest
names in the business. Jack Nicklaus produced the Melrose course; Tom Weiskopf
and partner Jay Morrish designed Bloody Point. Both are accessible to the
golfing public as part of the Daufuskie Island Resort.
Noted architect
Rees Jones has created a masterpiece at nearby Haig Point, a private facility
for members and their guests. It's a trio of courses that would stand out in
any city or urban area in the nation. The fact that all three are on a tiny
island only five miles long and a couple of miles wide with a permanent
population of just a few hundred is almost hard to believe.
